This afternoon was a big moment in my little girl's life, her very first ballet exam. She has been practising since the start of the year and today was the day. She and three of her classmates went in as a little group to perform their steps in front of an examiner. Each child was given a number between 1 and 4 which was pinned to their leotard for the duration of the exam.
Ashley was given number 4, her best friend was given number 3. An interesting conversation ensued, with much discussion about what was better... number 1 or number 4? I have no idea how the numbers are assigned, I assume they are merely a reference for the examiner, to be able to readily identify each child. But how would five year olds interpret the number they were given?
I listened as her little friend said "We are last because we are 3 and 4". Ashley thought about that for a moment and then said "No, we're the highest because we are 3 and 4!"
At which they both said "Yay!! We are the highest and they are first!!" Giggles and laughter followed and all was well. Between them, they figured out a way that all four girls were equal, regardless of their number. I hope their little hearts are always that big and generous.
It's all a matter of perspective isn't it?
Bye for now!
